Paint Colors

Are you looking to dramatically change a room? Painting is a great way to inexpensively change the feel and look of a room.

Selecting the color can be difficult. Designers, friends, magazines and everyone will tell you what color to paint however I feel you should select some favorites and spend time in the room with the swatches in different lighting. Remember that each color will look completely different outside of the store and also in the evening and night. Take your time thinking about it and decide which one speaks to you, which do you feel drawn to? Will you be comfortable with it for longer than a couple days?

Whites and Creams

Pale colors like this work almost everywhere, they’ll make the room seem larger. Just decide if you want a warm white or cool white. Each will have a different feel. If you’re not comfortable with a bold color, stick with a neutral hue like this and accent with furniture or even throw pillows and accessories.

Green

Greens are great, natural colors, they can bring the outdoors in. I find greens are great to use because there are so many different types of greens and they’re basically unisex. I think of green as a neutral color because its everywhere around us. Unless you use a very bold green, it won’t feel like there is as much color around as if you’d paint a room yellow or purple.

Blue

Blues are bold colors but can help you relax. Have you noticed McDonalds and other restaurants are reds and yellows…so you quickly eat and leave? I have a blue bedroom because my husband and I always like it cool and dark to sleep. The different blue colors give a cool comforting feeling. We have noticed that our dog also migrates to that room during the day!

Yellow

Yellow is such a bright, happy color. I encourage people to use this color in the kitchen, it helps create excitement, and this is often the most popular room in the house! If you go with yellow, make sure to balance it out with a contrasting color like blues or greens. You don’t want it to look like Big Bird’s house.

Red

Red is such a stimulating, dramatic color. In a bedroom it can be sexy, a kitchen vibrant and in a kids room it's playful. Just like yellow, make sure you balance it out. An easy way to balance red is with black and white if you like a modern look. Also, if you have a bold red accent wall (which is a hot trend now) let that be the only décor, don’t add to it with more accessories. Red's bold enough, it can handle all the attention by itself. My friend has a red accent wall in her living room and your eye immediately goes to it, it’s really a great look and fits her style perfectly.

Good luck with that new painting project. I hope to write about some fun painting and taping techniques soon. Stay tuned.
